Signature checks into… Grand Hyatt Cannes Hôtel Martinez
Traveller: Rheanne Scott
Room: Deluxe Guestroom
Property Address: 73 Boulevard de la Croisette, Cannes, France, 06400
Date: May 2016
Best for: A glamorous getaway on the Côte d’Azur.
Hôtel Martinez exudes old-world Art Deco glamour on the glittering Boulevard de la Croisette at the edge of the Mediterranean Sea. A favourite to the stars and top luxury brands during the Cannes Film Festival, Hôtel Martinez caters for all of your needs, whether through its two-Michelin-star restaurant, La Palme d’Or; relaxing at the plush L.RAPHAEL Beauty Spa; or enjoying a cocktail at its famous bar. It is also the perfect base to explore nearby towns on the Côte d’Azur.
The Signature factor
La Palme d’Or is not only Cannes’ only Michelin-starred restaurant, but arguably its most famous. Executive Chef Christian Sinicropi has led the dining room since 2007, when he took over from Christian Willer. Enjoy your impeccable meal at a table which looks out to the sea and the Croisette, featuring white-glove service. La Palme d’Or provides you with a variety of choices from an inventive series of ‘movements’ (a collection of three courses featuring a variety of tastes), a tasting menu and an à la carte menu. The restaurant is open to hotel guests and other patrons Tuesday through Saturday.
Hôtel Martinez is celebrated as one of Europe’s top luxury hotels. For me, a luxury hotel has to have something special to it beyond simply having a well-established brand name. Hôtel Martinez is rich in its décor and history. Originally opened in February 1929, it has retained its Art Deco architecture to the credit of the Grand Hyatt group, which purchased the hotel in 2012. Yet it also manages to feel modern with its updated interiors. It’s easy to see why Hôtel Martinez plays a key role in hosting some of the world’s top luxury brands during the Cannes Film Festival. Just check out its stunning spiral staircase – a favourite with any Instagrammer who visits – or views over the Mediterranean.
This hotel also has a fascinating history over the nearly 100 years it has stood tall along the Croisette. For example, during the Second World War, Hôtel Martinez was occupied by the French Army, Italian Army, the Commission d’Armistice, German Army and the US Army. It is also a top choice for film stars, producers, directors and luxury brands to stay and host parties during the Cannes Film Festival.
Upon arrival at the 409-room hotel, I was greeted warmly by the doorman and offered assistance right away. After passing numerous luxury vehicles parked in front, you enter through grand doors into a lofty, airy lobby, featuring marble and floor-to-ceiling windows letting in the light. I was welcomed by concierge and front desk staff, who were warm, helpful and friendly throughout my trip. Beautiful light fixtures and art installations add to the appeal that welcomes you.
I stayed in a Deluxe room on a high floor, which provided me with views of the soaring Esterel Mountains surrounding Cannes. It also featured a terrace, which was wonderful to enjoy in the mornings and evenings. My Art Deco-designed room had a divine king-sized bed, one of the most comfortable beds I’ve had the opportunity to sleep in. The plush white sheets were a warm welcome to crawl into each evening. A sitting area allowed you to gaze out on the terrace, as well as having a desk area. The large, luxurious marble bathroom was stocked with the hotel’s own bath products (73 La Croisette), a large tub and shower. Importantly, the hotel provides Wi-Fi in the rooms, a necessity in today’s connected world.
The Penthouse Suite is the jewel within Hôtel Martinez’s crown. A dreamy space located on the seventh floor of the hotel, its large private terrace alone, with breathtaking views over the Mediterranean, is worth the splurge. You can also experience a hammam and sauna, multiple bedrooms (available with up to four), a separate living area, kitchenette, Jacuzzi bath, Bose sound system, mini-bar, butler service and 24-hour room service.
During this year’s film festival, Chopard chose the penthouse to throw a party, which featured diamonds and stars, including Helen Mirren and Michelle Rodriguez. Further confirming the glamour of Hôtel Martinez is the recent nomination of the Penthouse in the 2016 World Travel Awards as one of France’s Leading Hotel Suites.
On my plate
Hôtel Martinez offers three restaurants and a bar to choose from. The most famous is the two-Michelin-starred La Palme d’Or, that draws visitors from far and wide, particularly during the Film Festival. Eat at the stylish Restaurant Zplage or at Le Relais, which features Latin menu items. Enjoy a delicious cocktail at Le Bar l’Amiral. Sit at the bar, which features gold plates engraved with the names of famous patrons, while sipping a fresh Bellini.
I wish I could take home…
The plush white bathrobe and slippers. While relaxing in my room, I lived in these and it was difficult to leave them behind!
The luxurious brand, L.RAPHAEL, is perfectly matched to the quality Hôtel Martinez offers. Located on the seventh floor, the spa is a tranquil place featuring the Swiss brand, which is focused on technological innovations and the latest in science in its products. It also features a private terrace which you can enjoy with a glass of its Lemon Juice Detox prior to your treatments.
L.RAPHAEL customises its treatments for the needs of each guest, building around its holistic philosophy of the ‘Seven Basics of Beauty’. The spa menu is extensive, featuring a variety of massage treatments, facials, body treatments, nail care, haircare and waxing. Popular treatments offered include the ‘Oxy-Power-Lift Caviar’, and ‘Treasures from the Dead Sea’. While in the spa, you can truly escape and deeply relax with expert staff taking care of you in a stylish and comforting setting.
In addition, complimentary yoga classes are on offer for all hotel guests, provided on its private beach, Zplage, during the summer months.
Hôtel Martinez offers all you could desire to enjoy time staying in. In fact, you may even need to talk yourself into leaving to explore! It has a beautiful pool and lounge area, luxury spa, three restaurants, complimentary yoga classes, a fitness centre, Kids’ Club, free Wi-Fi and a private beach club.
The Concierge team is friendly and incredibly helpful, happy to assist with anything from ordering a taxi, planning a day trip to a nearby town, recommending a restaurant or nearly anything else your heart desires. With the hotel is my base, I venture out to the glamorous city-state of Monaco and the picture-perfect Antibes, home to the Musée Picasso.
The hotel is a celebrity favourite during the Cannes Film Festival. It has played host to stars including Scarlett Johannsen, Bruce Willis, Jake Gyllenhaal, Diane Kruger, Eva Longoria, Julianne Moore and Robert Pattinson.
As Hôtel Martinez is part of the Hyatt Group, you can earn rewards under its Hyatt Gold Passport programme. In addition, try and score a room with a sea view as the views are breathtaking.
The one thing I wish I could change about my room would be the hair dryer situation. It is unfortunately one of the fixed hair dryers to the wall that you must also continuously hold down a button to operate. This can be quite inconvenient to operate, especially if someone else is using the bathroom. This could be easily remedied by offering detached, higher quality hair dryers that can be plugged into different outlets in the room.
Where to find it
Hôtel Martinez occupies a prime spot on the Croisette on the seafront and can be easily found. It is also easily accessible from Nice airport by car, train or bus.
