The spirit of Congo
Meet one of the world’s most endangered species, the majestic mountain gorilla, in the forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo on Raw Wildlife Encounters’ thrilling six-day adventure into Virunga National Park.
Your experience begins at the treetop Mikeno Lodge in the southern part of the park, located next to Senkwekwe Gorilla Orphanage, which you will visit during your stay.
You will also spend time with the Congohounds, which are part of the anti-poaching dog unit. It’s quite an experience to be allowed to participate in one of their unit’s training sessions. In fact, Raw Wildlife Encounters’ conservation levy from this tour goes directly towards supporting the operations of these brave pooches.
The other fantastic programme based at the lodge is the Virunga Widows Project, which is an enterprise project initiated to support the widows of rangers killed in the line of duty, protecting Virunga’s wildlife.
If you have the energy for it, you can also climb Mt Nyiragongo Volcano with the Virunga Park rangers. There are only two live volcanoes in Africa – Mt Nyiragongo and Mt Nyamuragira – and both are within spitting distance of the city of Goma. The climb up takes about seven hours and you then stay on the crater rim. It is sure to be one of the most exhilarating experiences you have ever had! To look down into the bubbling heart of a live volcano is beyond description, and well worth the tricky climb up.
You’ll follow your time in Virunga with a night on the edge of Lake Kivu at Lac Kivu Lodge. The view across Lake Kivu is stunning. You’ll spend a day around Goma, exploring local markets for vibrant Congolese cloth or traditional masks.
If you are looking for adventure, and are curious to see how wild the life in the Congo actually is, or just really how wild we humans once were, book a trip to Virunga National Park, and witness a great silverback mountain gorilla in his natural environment.
